Dehydrator? .. My experiences and my conclusions.

Lately I hear a lot in cookie community
about the so-called dryers that help the icing on the cookies
to take an entirely different view, the surface becomes shiny and beautiful.

For those of you who did not buy a dehydrator as well for those
who have not enough room in the kitchen for another device,
I have good news - you do not have to spend money to buy a dehydrator.

You already have it in your kitchen. And this is your oven. Yes!

I set to 100F and leave cookies
( with Royal icing on top of them) in the oven for 15 minutes.
If your oven has a fan air - it is a big plus.

Take a look at the pics...

I intentionally left a cookie on the table
to dry at room temperature (it is on the left)
and the other placed in the oven (right).

The difference is clearly visible! Do you agree with me? My oven is working great!

Conclusion - I personally will not buy dehydrator :)

    1. Michele, do you have a mark on your oven 'warm"? It should be after 170..I hope you do. :)

  7. I have done this as well and my oven doesn't go below 170. Set the oven at 170 for 5-10 minutes, turn it off and put the cookies in. The oven will be warm but not hot. And I can tell you from experience after purchasing a dehydrator that if you live in a very dry climate the dehydrator WILL dry your cookies out. Thanks for the great post and I LOVE your work!

    1. I put them to the oven immediately after flooding with icing.

  13. I realize that I am late to this post; however, I will post my comment any way. I use my oven's fan without turning on the heat. It works just as well without heating up the kitchen!

  14. I wonder if a convection oven would do the same thing. I have a conventional oven with a convection feature. With a convection oven, a fan distributes the heat evenly. I usually use fans to dry my cookies but I will try this.

  15. Thank you for sharing Nadia. I am new at decorating cookies, and have a couple of questions. what are the next steps after the 15 minutes? Do we leave them on the counter to cool off? for how long? Also, can I keep them in a container in the refrigerator, for how long? I leave in the west coast of Florida. Thank you in advance for the help.

    1. Thank you! I usually packed individually every cookie in cello bag and they stay fresh 2 weeks or more... in freezer for more then 3 month.
My icing is very stiff so that why it’s stay fresh for one week out of fridge and 2-3 weeks in a fridge...
